Do you ever wonder why some subdivisions have a greater home value than others? It is not only the quality of the homes or the location. Well landscaped homes have a higher resale value. When you drive up to a house and see old rotting landscape timbers or over grown plants you are automatically turned off. Landscaping can beautify any home, no matter how big or small and can increase the value of your home. The neater the landscape the higher the value. Landscaping also helps the environment, prevent soil erosion, feeds wildlife and provides oxygen. Many homeowners tend to put their landscaping off until the last minute, which can be understandable. Landscaping can be expensive depending on the area you live in, size of landscape beds you are wanting, plants size and species . Remember, you don’t have to get the most expensive plants, the largest flower beds or even do it all at one time. Some landscapers like myself offer many different options. Let me share a few with you. We offer a stages/phases program. For example if you are wanting the front and back landscape beds done, maybe a few trees, but can’t afford to do it all at the same time, this is where we can do just one at a time to better fit your budget. We also offer a monthly maintenance program. This is where we come once a month every month to pull weeds, trim shrubs when needed, fertilize when needed and deadhead blooming flowers at a reasonable monthly rate. This service is offered in three months and six months programs. If you would like to learn more about these services and many other services we offer click on the contact us page, garden services or landscape services above.

When winterizing you want to make sure you have trimmed all Shrubs, Grasses, Daylillies, Crape Myrtles, Flowers etc. back to an ideal height. Even though you are not seeing any growth in your plants foliage, the roots are still growing over winter. Pulling weeds, fertilizing, adding a type of pre-emergent grass killer and mulching heavily will not only help to keep your flower and shrub beds looking nice for the winter, it will keep roots from freezing and new grass from seeding in the upcoming spring. Although it may not look appealing, leaving some leaves in your landscape beds can help protect some of the more tender plants like mums, bulbs and small newly planted plants. Remember to drain all water hoses, soaker hoses, irrigation pipe and take all outdoor timers inside, this will prevent them form freezing. One more tip when winterizing, don’t forget to remove gas out of lawn equipment, grease all fittings, check lawn mower blades, remove excess weed-eater string, check filters and tires. Maintaining your landscape beds, hoses, and lawn equipment properly will keep plants happy, keep your equipment running longer and help you save money.

An interesting problem came one day as I was trying to get data from multiple databases. As this is an easy topic, I had a hard time of getting it to display in my php code. The problem is using the same column names on the tables. While MySql allows this PHP has a hard time distinguishing.

Example

Lets say I have the 3 tables below Customer, Business and Invoice. Notice that Customer and Business have the same columns.

Customer [id, name, phone]
Business [id, name, phone]
Invoice [id, business, customer, description]

A normal SQL SELECT statement for this would be

SELECT c.name, c.phone, b.name, b.phone, i.description
FROM Customer c, Business b, Invoice i
WHERE c.id=i.customer AND b.id=i.business

This would output the following columns.

MySql - RESULT [name, phone, name, phone, description]
PHP - RESULT[name, phone, description]

Notice how it has name and phone twice on the MySql but when PHP looks at it as an array it has it only once. Well we need to be able to use the other data from this statement. To do this we will add a simple AS statement for the duplicate column names.

Example

SELECT c.name AS cname, c.phone AS cphone, b.name, b.phone, i.description
FROM Customer c, Business b, Invoice i
WHERE c.id=i.customer AND b.id=i.business

RESULT

MySql - RESULT [cname, cphone, name, phone, description]
PHP - RESULT[cname, cphone, name, phone, description]

Take a look at the first 2 columns now. Just adding the AS statement allowed the column to have different names that you can process.

On the way to Louisville to see the haunted house at Waverly Hills, my friend says hey we need to try Lou Lou’s. Well naturally I like the local flavor and I wanna know what the hell is Lou Lou’s. Obviously he can’t remember the name but we are furiously googiling on our mobile phones trying to find the restaurant that beat Bobby Flay out on the Travel Channel for best breakfast dishes. Finally we get it. Lynn’s Paradise Cafe. What a great restaurant. It has its own unique twist to things having a combination of Cracker Barrel with gag gifts in the front of the store to a mix of Magnolias in Austin with RJ Thomas in Atlanta. Everything in the store is bright and exciting and makes the restaurant a lot of fun. I ordered the Hoppin Juan. Which is a black bean chili covered in mango salsa. Mmmm it was delicious. My friends also got some delicious dishes from the sweet potato pancakes to the Kentucky Scrambler, and even the meatloaf looked to die for. This is a definitly good local place to check out.

Here are some tips to make your do it yourself projects a success.

Most homeowners often tend to buy something because it looks good or has a nice bloom at the time of purchase. Often times a homeowner will plant there new plants in areas where it gets to much sun and water or not enough and wonder why nothing they purchase lives. In many cases I have found a homeowner will buy a plant when it is small, go home plant it and in a couple years that little cute plant becomes so overgrown the homeowner has to hire someone to remove the plant.Often times there are tags on most plants you purchase, however the tag could be wrong. To solve this problem always talk to a landscape professional or nurseryman about shrubs and plants before you plan to make a purchase to be sure you are getting the right size plant to fit your landscape. There are many factors in preparing your flower and shrub beds. Depending on your soil type, you may have to add some type of soil conditioner ( Miracle Grow Potting Mix or Organic Compost) are two very good products. Most nurseries and landscape companys offer these products. If you don’t own a tiller don’t worry there are options. You can always rent a tiller or hire someone to till the area you are planning to landscape. After all flower and shrub beds are tilled place your plants where you would like them to go. Once you are satisfied with the placement of your plants you can begin the fun part, plant them and mulch the shrub beds. When mulching always use three to six inches on top of the soil keeping the mulch from covering your newly planted plants.
